Formed in 2011, Copenhagen-based act Piss Vortex spent three years in the making of their debut album. The quartet, i.e. Simon S. Christensen (v), Christian Bonnesen (g), Niclas J. Sauffaus (d), and Rasmus Moesby (b), finally recorded the material in three days, mainly live to maintain a raw, improvisional and organic sound. The material was produced by Jakob R. Nielsen (Anti Ritual, Lack, Rising) and gets released via also-Copenhagen-based DIY-label Indisciplinarian (think: Fossils, Anti Ritual, Rising or Jeppe Beldring, which all are local bands / projects), both digitally and on vinyl (in an edition of 500 copies).

This recording, which has a total running time of twenty four minutes, brings Grindcore, but not ‘just’ Grindcore at all. On the contrary… Take the sound, for instance. It’s slamming, massive and monolithic, which is rather distinctive from the ‘average’ Grind-scene. I am convinced of these guys’ craftsmanship after the instrumental opener Detrimentalist, but things get only better. At the one hand, Piss Vortex takes elements from the classic school, i.e. Brutal Truth, Terrorizer, Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror. At the other hand, they try to experiment within the very same regions as, let’s say, Nasum, Noisear or Rotten Sound (also the Bastardized-roster comes to mind from time to time, especially within the more Hardcore-directed compositions). Not one single tracks sounds like another one, and that is quite remarkable. Lots of different angles, tempo-changes, hooks, influences from un-existing trends (the long final track, Our Maker’s Invisible Hand, for example, comes with quite some avant-garde structures, which is truly attractive), this recording is quite unique in its totality. Besides, the band created (or developed) an own sound, which characterises the whole album, and which defines the coherence in between the fourteen individual sonic assaults. Add the fabulous sound quality on top of it (superior mix!!!), and the open-minded Grind-fan understands what I am trying to say: Piss Vortex are Grindcore 2.0 Supremacy. Recommended!
