I remember that I was extremely confused when I heard this project for the very first time. It was the mini-album First Spit (1) that crossed my way almost four years ago. First Spit was the first effort that showed a musician that was both creative and experimental. But that EP was heard to digest too, at least for me and my sensitive stomach. One year later, this Bordeaux-based solo-outfit of Jeff Maurer returned with a first full length, called The Other Shore (2), which simply continued that eccentric approach.
On February 22nd 2015 we did upload the review which I wrote for First Spit, the debut by Broken Down, which is a solo-outfit by Altsphere Production‘s label owner JeFF (Jeff Maurer). I know I wasn’t that happy with that debut, so when I did receive the new Broken Down-album, I did listen to the first one once again. Actually, my opinion about that debut did not really change. So I was quite anxious and prejudiced when listening to this new effort for the first time.
Sometimes it’s a hard job to be a reviewer. Like in this case. I do not know, even after three listens, what to think about this album. Do I like it or not? Is it the masochistic part within me that makes me enjoy this material despite being extremely irritating, or is it a hidden temptation poisoning the listeners’ mind? Really, I have no idea…
