When I started reading the info on this band, I was thinking this might just be another band fishing in the same pond. By which I mean it could have been another copycat of bands like Nightwish, Epica or one of those other bands in the symphonic – progressive – traditional – power metal genre.
To tell you the truth, they are, but not completely. Oh yes, they are also fronted by a female vocalist, and she can sing like an opera diva – or almost – but one of the main differences Tyranny Of Hours has, is that she not constantly does that. Michelle Mattair is gifted with a very good voice, and makes good use of it, but the best part of it is that she varies her singing from opera like, to normal.
Musically this album can surely stand it’s ground. The compositions are well thought of, and, despite the fact that this is quite a young band, they seem to be able to play their instruments. Of course the production, which is crisp and clean, something that is mostly not the case when talking of an independent release, also helps a lot. A big surprise this album was, especially for a debut album. If this band continues releasing albums/material like this they surely deserve a fair chance to make it.
