Another Svart Records release, and yet another shot of great retro-tasting music!
Another Svart Records release, and yet another shot of great retro-tasting music!
As it turns out, the people at Finland's Svart Records have a musical taste which extends beyond the mere “Rock”, “Metal”, and “Punk” genres, as proven with this one-man NeoFolk act Pyhä Kuolema (band name translating to “sacred death”).
Oh my...Svart Records IS swiftly becoming one of my favorite labels indeed! I mean, somehow these dudes manage to get the pick of more adventurous bands in Finland, you know, and that such is more than to my liking, is a self-evident fact of life!
Woah...what a great act, this Domovoid! Imagine what might happen if a singer/ lead guitarist raised on a daily dose of Hawkwind, and a rhythm guitarist/ keyboardist whose main course was a consequent package of Black Sabbath, would come together on a friendly basis to start playing music together...that's what this band sounds like...for real! I other words, what you get here is the heaviest Psychedelic Rock, subgenre Space Rock, you have ever heard!
I ended the review I did for January’s comeback-EP Inner Evil (it was the first thing this Finnish band did after an eighteen-year hiatus) with ‘awaiting the upcoming full length, I can’t stop craving for more…’. It was meant to be a compliment, for this band’s return was excellent! Check out the update on February 23rd on this wonderful site… One of the tracks from that two-tracker, by the way, has been re-recorded for this full length (God Is Delusion).
Oranssi Pazuzu were formed in 2007 by Juho ‘Jun-His’ Vanhanen, who wanted to do something in the vein of his band Kuolleet Intiaanit, but much heavier, bleaker, more extreme. The band recorded two full lengths (Muukalainen Puhuu and Kosmonument) and a split (with another weird Finnish band, Candy Cane) before, and this new material goes on in the very same weird vein. So if you’re trusted with any former stuff, you might expect the usual, i.e. the unusual!
Tombstoned are a pretty young act (formed in 2010) from Finland that now debut with a self-called full length studio recording (forty seven minutes for six tracks). Last year the trio self-released a two-track EP, which drew the attention of Svart Records, with this full album as first result of their co-operation.
It’ll come as no surprise to anyone who’s familiar with Swedish vocalist Lord Chritus’ former bands Terra Firma, Count Raven, Saint Vitus and Lord Vicar that Goatess are a stoner/ doom metal band. Goatess takes you all over the place with deep cut grooves, power jams and a true electrifying feeling that you are riding right along with Findus’ bass laden, heavily distorted wall of soundmachine in the slow to mid-tempo range.
This band with the name Brutus is a Scandinavian act with members from Norway and Sweden in its ranks. The guys collaborate in order to pay tribute to the witchcraftian Seventies scene, trying to put a psychedelic soul and bluesy retro-Rock into the whole concept. The recording process took quite a while, but the guys wanted to create a faultless concept and the recording sessions took place in both Norway (Subsonic Society Oslo) and Sweden (Music-a-Matic Studio in Gothenburg for final mix and mastering).
