German duo Ewigeis (meaning something like ‘eternal ice’ but beautifully (and that’s my honest opinion) written in incorrect German language) started in 2008, and they self-released a demo in 2009, Wolfsmond, (‘mouth of the wolf’), and one in 2011, Abgrund (‘abyss’). Now they (vocalist / lyricist / multi-instrumentalist / producer Saat and drummer / co-producer Angsul) return with the third demonstrational recording, which is called Daupuz; this time via Greece’s Nebular Winter Productions. Daupuz comes on tape in a limited edition of 100 copies only (single-sided and hand-numbered), and the three tracks last for almost fifteen minutes.
The demo opens with the title track, which brings fast and very Nordic-sounding Black Metal with a soul of purity and power. Once again influenced by the majesty of the glorious Second Wave, these sounds of nebular and wintry malignancy breathe that specific stench we all want to smell, don’t we?! Once again there is no need to search for originality, for this track has everything the purist needs: a nasty lo-fi sound, fast yet ingeniously simplistic riffs and rhythms, epic leads and a mostly obscure atmosphere. The second track, …wie Schnee, starts with a slow-tuned semi-acoustic introduction, fastly joined by grim vocals, which create a sphere of utter eeriness. After two minutes, things transmorph into down-tuned and lo-fi, little depressive and even quasi-suicidal atmospheres, filled with bleak hints of despair. What a grandiose track this is!... Daupuz ends with Seelensplitter, which is more alike to the opening track. It brings a traditional form of nineties-oriented majesty, with more than a handful of bathorian epic structures, going for some specific rhythms as well as the average atmosphere, and a mostly atmospheric undertone.
There isn’t but one conclusion to make. After three great, excuse me, splendid demonstrational releases, it is time to record and release a full length that must last for, at least, an hour. It’s not a suggestion; it’s a must, for otherwise I will cry…
