Projet Cluster are a trio I had not heard of before, but apparently they acted under the moniker of Sugar Pill before, if I’m not mistaken. In any case, Christopher Mc Ghee, Charlie Chine and Jérôme Grivel did record this album, Hoc Unto Fecit, live at the Chapelle St Catherine, Breil sur Roya (in the south of France, close to the Italian border), in November 2014, and it resulted in one lengthy piece of Aural Art (forty minutes of length in total).

The opening scene brings embroiled string sessions (cello or violin at first), finally joined by different percussions (drums, cymbals, tympani), and slowly on this live improvisation evolves towards a mind-disturbing experience. After five ‘growing’ minutes, the session totally drops back, but that’s just a temporary effect, for now the game really is gonna begin. The very same improve-jazzy drum patterns got joined by weird sounds and samples, and an evil-tortured voice, before fading away once again in ominous silence (we’re clocking just over eight minutes). This is how the sonic experiment continues, by searching for a balance in between smaller excerpts of tranquillity and integrity, and overpowering chapters of free style Jazz and high-energetic Pseudo-Noise-Ambience (in case this might exist).

Once in a while, the whole leans over towards rather occult ritual stuff, cf. the eerie excerpt at about sixteen minutes (once again with those chilly, harsh screaming voices), and these parts are my favourite ones – but of course that isn’t but a personal, subjective impression. For I am pretty sure everyone with an open mind, at least the sonic way, will find his or her personal preferences, whether it be a frenzy Jazz part, a psychedelic Trance chapter, or a more sinister part that redefines Fusion into a new language (cf. the Oriental additions at twenty five). What to think, for example, about the purely grinding outbursts at the end of this sonic journey???
