Dutch act Swazafix was a band with Theo Loomans in its ranks. He formed this band in 1990 after he left Asphyx (he reformed Asphyx a couple of years later, by the way). Those who are ‘into the Dutch Old School scene’ will remember his name as well from bands like Soulburn, Evoker or Gomorha (back then always active in these bands’ demo years; we’re talking about the end of the eighties!). He died in 1998.

With Swazafix, Theo (v, g) and three other musicians, Valy (g), Erik (b), and Andrew (d), recorded a nameless promotional tape in 1991, and a nameless demonstrational tape in 1992. It’s this stuff that appears on the compilation-CD Anthems Of Apostasy. The first three tracks are taken from the demo, the next ones from the promo. Both of them were recorded at Franky’s Recording Kitchen, one of the most interesting studios from the Netherlands back then, with Satanic Twin Berthus Westerhuys as producer (think: Dead head, Severe Torture, Cantara, God Dethroned, Callenish Circle a.m.m.). it Berthus as well who did the remastering of this old material for the compilation.

Musically the Death Metal Swazafix brought was very much alike to the stuff from back then. Brutal and strong Death anthems with a focus on deep, filthy grunts (here I want to refer to Theo’s activities in Asphyx again), and injected with some fiery guitar solos and driven by a massive rhythm section. The band was said to be inspired by Possessed, Slayer, Venom and Celtic Frost, but I guess there is more comparison to the Dutch scene. …even though one cannot deny the influences from, for example, Possessed at all.
