Arrowwood

Our dearest Concreteweb’s headquarters did recently receive a cd-r / mp3 with seven Folk-oriented albums. As a matter of fact, Strawberry Oracle Promotions will give some renewed attention to seven bands / projects within the Folk scene by having this material put on the foreground again. It deals with both recent as well as pretty old recordings, and in order to give this stuff a boost, I will be so kind to have it reviewed.

Arkhamin Kirjasto

Arkhamin Kirjasto latest 3-track 7” EP is worth checking out, but not really a life and death purchase. Not now, but who knows what the future hold? Unholy Priest of Holy Trinity of Death (full title)is an assorted musical melding pot with ample amounts of old school death metal, groove rock and chugging metal all rolled into one. Nothing presented here is bad by any means, it just lacks the singular identity to stand on his own.

Ape Skull

The style is very much based on late 1960s-early 1970s music, primarily bluesy and psych rock. However Ape Skull inject that particular sound with a healthy dose of adrenaline as they deliver all the soul and fire that was good about this type of music and they thrust it out there with pure grit and surging grooves This is down and dirty bluesy rock music with an edge and plenty of heart and it sounds like the band is having a good time. The first track ”Lazy” reminds me a little of Cream and vocally as well.

TOAD

TOAD is the abbreviation for Take Over And Destroy. This act self-released the EP Rotten Tide in 2012, and this newest effort, Endless Night, was captured at the end of 2012’s Autumn by the same producer / engineer that did that EP, Bob Hoag (at the Flying Blanket Recording studio, also in Arizona). The five-track record lasts for almost half an hour. It stands for a mixture of common / uncommon Death and Black Metal, amplified with different other details, like atmospheric keyboard lines or (NWOB) HM-elements.

Sign Of The Jackal

Italian band Sign Of The Jackal was formed in 2007 and released a first demo-MCD in 2008, which was called Haunted House Tapes. Heavy Artillery Records re-released this stuff on vinyl somewhat later on, and it’s this label that also released the first official EP, The Beyond, in 2011.

Paria

Germany’s Paria return with their third full length album, called Surrealist Satanist, having a total duration of almost three quarters of an hour. Seven tracks clocking almost three quarters of an hour, based on eerie and hypnotic yet definitely angry and malignant extremity, that’s what Surrealist Satanist stands for. The songs are fast and quite simplistic, with a traditional sound that comes close to the Nordic one (beware: Nordic does not necessarily mean Norwegian in this case), but they aren’t just blasted pyroclastic outbursts at all.

Impiety

I recently reviewed the compilation album Vengeance Hell Immemorial (see update July 2013) by Singaporean Extreme Metal project Impiety, built around Mister Shyaithan.

Battlecross

When the Detroit-based combo Battlecross ended their North American tour with In Flames earlier this year, the quartet (Kyle ‘Gumby’ Gunther-v, Tony Asta-g, Hiran Deraniyagala-g, and Don Slater-b; with session assistance on drums by The Black Dahlia Murder / All That Remains-member Shannon Lucas) entered the Audio Hammer Studio to record the sophomore Metal Blade full length, after 2011’s Pursuit Of Ho

Voice Of Revenge

Voice Of Revenge are a band from Würzburg, Germany, that were formed in 2005 by guitarist Peter Kretschmer and vocalist / guitar player Thomas Döll. In 2007, they self-released an impressing EP, called Mutilated Corpse, which led them to great festivals, such as Bringer Of Death or Riders Of The Storm.
