When They Wake

This Zug based Swiss Emo Rock band was originated in 2006 by singer Sven Ehmes and guitarist Stephan Kaiser as a means to do some occasional jam sessions, and soon grew out by the band (also comprising bassist/ pianist Jonathan Geiger and drummer/ pianist Silvan Strinimann) fitting out its own studio to record its April 2010 released EP The Progression, which stands as a symbol for the awakening of the musicians involved.

As a bandname, Subztain came to life when lead singer/ bassist Andreas Morling, guitarists Marcus Wahlstrom & Robin Sandvik, and drummer Mattias Nielsen were forced, in the Summer of 2011, to change the name (Subtopia) they were previously known under in their area of the world (a town called Upplands Väsby, a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden well know for having already spawned the likes of Europe, Candlemass and Heat upon the Earth), due t

Skull Branded Pirates

From Leeds, UK, comes a band of jolly friends, who've taken the Pirate Metal theme and gave it a completely new musical outlook, which differs quite from what Power Metal acts such as Running Wild, and more recently Alestorm and Swashbuckle have delivered. Indeed, the main influences SBP uses come from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Manowar. In other words, Traditional Heavy Metal (with progressive leanings).

Finland is a country which has already given us quite a few fine bands from a variety of genres over the past couple of decades. Quite a few of those bands harkened back to days of yore in musical history, but nevertheless they usually succeeded in bringing something fresh. From the country's capital comes Minutian, who aspire “to bring something fresh to the world of traditional Rock rhythms”.

The Internet, sometimes a great tool for fact-finding, but occasionally a pain in the b...! For some reason, I was quite unable to log onto this Australian Hard Rock band's own website (www.) babyjane.cm.au, so I have no clear idea of when the band formed and whether line-up changes occurred, as that kind of info was not revealed on other sites either. So, what dó I now?

Never A Hero

This “Rock/ Alternative”band from Sudbury in Suffolk (South-East England) is said to have been formed in 2009, when members of 2 local bands merged together to write something entirely different from their and the current Rock market's usual style. When we browse through the band members' bios (available at (www.) neverahero.net for further details), we find the story was slightly more complicated than that!

Buckshot Facelift

After some line-up changes, Long Island-based combo Buckshot Facelift return with the third long player, after Universal Goat Tilt and Anchors Of The Armless Gods. The band recorded the new album at Audio Playground with Keith Moore (production, engineering, mix and mastering).

The result is an amazing collection of unique, original Grind-explosions with a slight touch of exaggeration. However, because of the creative ideas, this exaggerated approach gets easily excused.

Saltatio Mortis

Manufactum III is another live-album (after I and II, but I guess you’re smart enough to find it out yourself), captured in front of about 8,000 wild fans during a gig in Hamburg, Germany.

Pros: wonderful sound! There is nothing that bothers when it comes to the sound. It is just like it has been registered in a few hundreds of takes in a professional studio, then enriched with the enthusiastic support of a couple of thousands of fans. Another pro: the instrumental part of the deal. My personal appreciation goes to the bag pipes and percussion parts

Totengeflüster (whispers of the Dead) were formed in 2007 by Totleben, who wanted to create his own interpretation of grim Black Metal with classical-symphonic elements. Soon he joined forces with a same-minded guy, Narbengrund, who wrote lyrics that did fit well to the music and ideas of Totengeflüster. Narbengrund takes care of the vocals too, by the way. And the line-up gets finally completed by Schattendorn, who performs the session drums (live as well).
